 FIRST YEAR
During the first year, an introductory into the concepts of health information and content are achieved as the backbone to medical records and maintenance. Complimentary class work consisting of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and study of disease reinforcement medical concepts as well as health information data comprehension. Many students engage in the first year curriculum in order to obtain medical transcription's skills for the health information workplace. The last term of the first year consists of 12 hours a week with transcription-related coursework and lab application. Concluding the first year, students are encouraged to take a Medical Transcription Proficiency Examination (pdf) offered by the Health Information Technology Program as an additional component to the student's resume and as a culmination to their educational experience. For those students wishing to pursue the Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology, their education progresses to the second year curriculum.
SECOND YEAR
The second year of the program, consists of a rigorous schedule that is designed to equip the student with an in depth knowledge of the legality issues surrounding health information, as well as extensive application of medical coding practices with a variety of coding manuals and procedures; both manually and digitally. Inclusive study into ambulatory care and health information management provide the student with comprehensive skills to advance their abilities into many different aspects of the health information field. Emphasis in the second year curriculum is based on specific medical information components that are dealt with on a state, federal, and voluntary level for quality and continuity of care. The second year of the health information experience places the student into hands-on application of their knowledge through directed practice. There are three directed practice continuums that occur prior to entrance with the first occurring in the summer, then again in the winter and the spring of the second year curriculum. The second year provides the student with the ability to obtain the Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Technology (pdf). Furthermore, after graduation, the student may sit for the national accreditation examination in order to achieve the distinction of Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
